Pressroom Search:
Victorian Mansions of Old Louisville visits historic homes in city’s ‘queen among neighborhoods’

For Release: 2008-06-23 13:57:00

Louisville may seem like an unlikely place to find America’s largest Victorian neighborhood, but this living museum south of Louisville’s downtown business district was conceived to be a queen among neighborhoods. These treasures are explored in Victorian Mansions of Old Louisville, airing Tuesday, July 8 at 10:30/9:30 p.m. CT on KET1 and Monday, July 14 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET2.

Through the use of archival imagery and beautiful cinematography, the program travels back in time to the area now known as Old Louisville and to the site of the Southern Exposition held there in the late 1880s. By the time the Exposition closed in 1887, a million people had visited Louisville and a surge in residential development was underway in the surrounding neighborhoods. In 1885 alone, 260 homes were built — the most lavish of them along Third Street, the first major Louisville thoroughfare to be paved with asphalt.

Victorian Mansions of Old Louisville explains the many diverse architectural styles found within the late Victorian era, and journeys through some of these amazing Old Louisville homes. Included are interior views of the Conrad-Caldwell House and the Ferguson Beaux Arts Mansion, now the home of the Filson Historical Society. The sheer concentration of houses — nearly 1,400 of them — makes this neighborhood a virtual living classroom for the late Victorian Era of architectural styles and culture.

Victorian Mansions of Old Louisville is produced by Michael Breeding MEDIA. More information about KET programming and education services, as well as how to support KET, can be found at www.ket.org.
