This season, Masterpiece Mystery! says goodbye to two esteemed British crime fighters when it retires the stiff-upper-lipped Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) and the aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) in finales to “Foyle’s War” and “The Inspector Lynley Mysteries.”The three-part “Foyle’s War, Series V” airs Sundays, beginning July 13 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1 and Thursdays, beginning July 17 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET2.
The final “Foyle’s War” series, which takes place during World War II, kicks off with “Plan of Attack.” When a troubled young airman is found hanged, suicide seems the obvious explanation, but Sergeant Milner has his doubts. Before he can test his theories, a shocking act of violence turns the station upside down, forcing Foyle out of retirement. It’s soon clear that the alleged suicide is no open-and-shut case.
Then, in “Broken Souls,” the murder of an unpopular young doctor yields no shortage of potential suspects, including someone for whom Foyle has a deep empathy. In the meantime, Foyle’s driver, Sam, comes to the aid of a friend whose husband, an injured POW, returns from the war angry to find that things at home have changed while he was away.
Finally, “All Clear” presents the murder of a local committee member, which puts Foyle at odds with his old friend, the American captain John Kieffer. As the investigation deepens, Foyle finds himself peering into one of the darkest corners of the war effort to uncover a devastating secret the Allies would rather keep hidden.
The two-part “The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Series VII” airs in August.
Masterpiece Mystery! is produced by WGBH/Boston. More information about KET programming and education services, as well as how to support KET, can be found at www.ket.org.
