‘You are being watched,’ literally, in Britain
When they say “you are being watched,” in Great Britain they literally mean it. Closed-circuit television came to Britain in 1967, when a small tea house in Victoria introduced a basic black-and-white camera to see if patrons were taking too many tea cakes.

A “behind-the-camera” look at a British phenomenon with global implications is presented in CCTV: You Are Being Watched, airing Tuesday, July 29 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET2 and Wednesday, July 30 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1.

From those humble beginnings in Victoria, an entire high-tech industry has arisen. Surveillance technology is so sophisticated it can be –– and is –– placed almost anywhere; Britain now has 4 million surveillance cameras deployed. By 2012, the country is expected to have 8 million.

CCTV: You Are Being Watched is produced by Steadfast Television.
