Western Kentucky University President Gary Ransdell on next One to One with Bill Goodman

On the next One to One, Bill Goodman talks to Dr. Gary Ransdell at Western Kentucky University. The program airs Sunday, July 27 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, July 29 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.

The ninth president of WKU, Ransdell is also a graduate of the university. He discusses his background, including his undergraduate work at WKU; his early career in academics at Indiana, Southern Methodist and Clemson universities; and his return to Western as president. Other topics include changes in the campus, faculty and atmosphere at WKU since his years as a student, as well as his goals for the future of the university such as the recruitment of students and faculty, engaging the surrounding communities and improving the quality of life for all those within the university’s reach.

Ransdell also delves into the impact of state budget cuts on higher education, how the funding of the university is organized and the complicated relationship between the higher learning institutions of the state and the Council on Postsecondary Education.

Finally, Ransdell details the benefits of two exciting academic programs at Western: the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, which recruits and encourages gifted high school students, and the Honors College, which provides talented undergraduates with an intimate, community-based degree program. Ransdell explains how programs like these enhance the intellectual environment not only on campus, but also across the Commonwealth.
