KET airs encore of The Forgetting, new programs with up-to-the-minute Alzheimer’s information

For Release: 2008-07-21 15:23:00

When The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s first aired on PBS in 2004, more than 10 million people tuned in to watch. Since then, there have been significant advances in Alzheimer’s research and over one million more Americans have developed the disease. KET presents a special encore of The Forgetting, airing Sunday, Aug. 3 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1 and Thursday, Aug. 7 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET2. The Forgetting is followed by a new program, The Future of Alzheimer’s with actor David Hyde Pierce (Frasier), which features up-to-the-minute information on Alzheimer’s.

The Forgetting provides an in-depth look at the entire spectrum of the Alzheimer’s epidemic: the tragedy, the rising numbers, humankind’s fascination with dementia and the worldwide effort to find a cure. The stories of three victims and their families bring the intense, real-world experience of Alzheimer’s disease poignantly to life and are woven together with the history and biology of the disease and the race to find a cure.

The Future of Alzheimer’s is a 30-minute follow-up special hosted by Pierce, who has experienced Alzheimer’s first-hand through the illnesses of his father and grandfather. Pierce moderates a panel of medical experts and scientists who discuss the latest developments in research and what early diagnosis and treatment means for patients and their families.

Also, on One to One with Bill Goodman, neurologist Gregory A. Jicha, M.D. from the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky talks about the latest research on the causes and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The program airs Sunday, Aug. 3 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.

KET’s outreach project partner for The Forgetting is the Alzheimer's Association Greater Kentucky/Southern Indiana chapter. Viewers seeking more information on Alzheimer’s can call (800) 272-3900 or visit www.alz.org/kyin.

The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s and The Future of Alzheimer’s are produced by Twin Cities Public Television/St. Paul, Minn. One to One with Bill Goodman is a KET production, produced by Bill Goodman and Cindy Asher.
