On the next One to One, Bill Goodman speaks with veteran farm broadcaster Jack Crowner, owner and operator of the Farm Service Radio Network and an inductee into the National Association of Farm Broadcasters Hall of Fame. The program airs Sunday, Aug. 31 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.The Farm Service Radio Network provides daily farm news and information to local rural radio stations in Kentucky, Indiana and nearby states. Crowner has been providing vital information to farmers through radio and television since 1957, and today his reports are available online.
Crowner discusses changes in technology since he began broadcasting and describes how he produces five farm programs: Accent Agriculture, Tobacco Talk, Cow Country News, Today’s Markets and Kentucky Farmer.
The broadcaster goes on to talk about the concerns of Kentucky farmers, including gas prices, organic farming, emergency government assistance and the changing tobacco market. Crowner also addresses consumer concerns such as food freshness, food safety and the humane treatment of animals.
Crowner recalls his 20 years as announcer for the Kentucky State Fair and auctioneer of the fair’s grand champion country ham. He then discusses the future of farm news, indicating that broadcasters must not forget their local, rural audiences.
