Viewers meet muralist Carole Jackson-Powell, learn about one of Kentucky’s rarest plants and visit Lexington’s annual Woodland Dog Paddle on the next edition of Kentucky Life. The program, hosted by Dave Shuffett, airs Saturday, Sept. 13 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET1; Sunday, Sept. 14 at 4:30/3:30 p.m. CT on KET1; and Sunday, Sept. 14 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET2.First, Dave meets Powell, a muralist and painter who creates custom-designed murals for homes, restaurants, churches and offices. Her repertoire includes romantic Tuscan-style scenes for dining rooms and kitchens, and whimsical images of pixies, jungles, airplanes and more for kids’ rooms.
Next, the program looks at one of the state’s rarest plants, Short’s Goldenrod. This endangered plant, thought to be extinct for many years, was rediscovered in 1939 near Blue Licks. Kentucky State Nature Preserve biologists and preserve managers discuss the globally rare plant. This segment also visits the Short’s Goldenrod Festival, showcasing the rare plant and the work of the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission.
Finally, Kentucky Life visits the Woodland Dog Paddle in Lexington. Hundreds of dogs enjoy an annual swim in the pool the weekend after the pool closes to humans on Labor Day at Woodland Park. The Dog Paddle benefits the Friends of the Dog Park, a non-profit organization that supports and sustains off-leash areas in Fayette County and promotes responsible dog ownership.
