Kentucky wildflowers on display in new program

For Release: 2008-09-02 09:34:00

They thrive on roadsides, in forests, meadows, wetlands — and increasingly, in backyards. Wildflowers are a part of Kentucky’s ecology that is enjoying renewed interest. Viewers discover the beauty — and low-maintenance landscaping applications — of native flora in A Walk Through Kentucky Wildflowers, airing Thursday, Sept. 18 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1 and Monday, Sept. 22 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET2.

While sown extensively for beauty and low maintenance, they are also used in controlling erosion, as a residential ground cover and in home gardens. Wildflowers can easily be seeded and enjoyed as annuals or perennials, and today there is an increasing interest by gardeners, naturalists, hobbyists, photographers and people who are environmentally aware to understand, protect and even incorporate wildflowers into their environment.

Hosted by Thomas Barnes, the coauthor of Wildflowers and Ferns of Kentucky, the program guides viewers through an exploration of some of the more than 2,000 native wildflowers found in the Commonwealth. As it travels to each of Kentucky’s geographic regions, the documentary reveals the relationships between people and plants, which provides gardeners and hobbyists an endless, intricate and fascinating story of interdependence and beauty.

A Walk Through Kentucky Wildflowers was produced, written and directed by Britt Davis. More information about KET programming and education services, as well as how to support KET, can be found at www.ket.org.
