On the next Connections, Renee speaks with educator Margaret Dunbar-Demaree, founder and executive director of the 1+1=U program in Louisville, followed by Ryce Hatchett, program director of Amachi Central Kentucky. The program airs Friday, Sept. 26 at 4/3 p.m. CT on KET2 and Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1:30/12:30 p.m. CT on KET1.

Demaree’s 1+1=U helps students with behavioral and academic problems stay in school. Every other Saturday, 15 student participants, mentors and tutors gather for roundtable discussions; individual tutoring in math, science, English and Spanish; and an exercise program. Demaree discusses her methods in helping children with their social, behavioral and academic issues; her dreams for the future of the program; and the first student she worked with, C.J. Spillman, who is now a highly-ranked football player at Marshall University and a mentor himself.

Then, Renee sits down with Hatchett to learn about Amachi Central Kentucky. The program assists children of incarcerated parents through mentoring relationships. An estimated 2.5 million children in the U.S. have one or both parents in prison, and many of those children are at a higher risk of ending up in prison themselves. Modeled after the Big Brother Big Sister program, Amachi mentors hope to provide children with brighter futures by establishing a consistent caring presence.

Connections with Renee Shaw is a KET production, produced by Shaw and Carolyn Gwinn. More information about Connections, including streaming video, is available at www.ket.org/connections.
