The next edition of Louisville Life features Fontaine Ferry Park; the WHAS Crusade for Children; the Louisville Fire Department; Louisville 2035 author Steve Wiser; and the Ursuline Sisters. The program, hosted by Candyce Clifft, airs Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2; Friday, Sept. 26 at 5:30/4:30 p.m. CT on KET2; and Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET1.First, Louisville Life looks back at Fontaine Ferry Park, which will be the focus of one of the Frazier International History Museum’s 2009 exhibits. The park opened in 1905 and had four roller coasters, a Ferris wheel and a bicycle track among its attractions. Fontaine Ferry Park was so successful that it became one of the most famous parks in the country, operating close to 65 years before closing in 1969.
Then, Louisville Life meets people who have been touched by the WHAS Crusade for Children, WHAS-TV’s annual telethon that raises money for agencies, schools and hospitals that serve children with special needs. One young piano player shares his own arrangement of the Crusade theme, “One Dream, One Heart.”
Next, the program looks at the history of the Louisville Fire Department. Organized in 1858, the Steam Engine Fire Department of Louisville consisted of three fire stations, 65 men, 23 horses and five steam engines. Now more than 150 years old, the Louisville Fire Department responds to more than 50,000 incidents a year and employs more than 500 men and women.
Then, Candyce interviews architect and historian Wiser about his new book, Louisville 2035. Wiser predicts the next hot new residential and business districts, and talks about Louisville’s lost landmarks and proposed structures that were never built.
Finally, Louisville Life spotlights the Ursaline Sisters of Louisville, a congregation of women which has a rich history in Louisville dating back to 1858.
