Pressroom Search:
Professor’s ‘last lecture’ touches students, others

For Release: 2008-09-29 12:50:00

Bestselling book and popular online video comes to television

On September 18, 2007, computer science professor Randy Pausch stepped in front of an audience of 400 people at Carnegie Mellon University to deliver his last lecture, entitled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” With slides of his CT scans beaming out to the audience, the professor told his audience about the cancer that was devouring his pancreas and that would claim his life in a matter of months. This last appearance before his students has been captured in The Last Lecture, airing Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET2.

On the stage that day, Pausch was youthful, energetic, handsome and often cheerfully, darkly funny. During the lecture, he was upbeat and humorous, alternating between wisecracks, insights on computer science and engineering education, advice on building multi-disciplinary collaborations, working in groups and interacting with other people, offering inspirational life lessons — and performing push-ups on stage.

Pausch’s lecture has become a phenomenon, celebrating the dreams we all strive to make realities. Available online, the lecture has been viewed internationally more than a million times.

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt,” Pausch said, “just how we play the hand.”

The Last Lecture is produced by Carnegie Mellon University. More information about KET programming and education services, as well as how to support KET, can be found at www.ket.org.
