Renee speaks with Dr. Jai Gilliam, pediatrician and internal medicine specialist at Lexington's Northside Family Medical Center, about his practice and minority health issues on the next Connections with Renee Shaw. The program airs Friday, Nov. 28 at 4/3 p.m. CT on KET2.Gilliam, a graduate of Kentucky State University and the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine, reveals that it was h is childhood dream to become a physician. In order to realize that dream, Gilliam had to overcome a poor start to his academic career. He talks about how he achieved his goal and the importance of sharing his story with students who may be having the same difficulties.
The doctor also discusses how he gains the trust of his patients by welcoming questions and internet research, dealing with communication and cultural barriers, and encouraging them to view their health as a personal responsibility. Gilliam suggest s that people with fears or reservations about seeking health care should find a physician who listens carefully and takes the time to address all of the patient's needs.
Gilliam then discusses contributing factors to the disproportionate number of African Americans affected by chronic diseases. Some causes, he says, include an underlying lack of trust in the medical community, poor understanding of family medical history and inadequate access to health care.
Finally, Gilliam addresses men's health issues and the rising numbers of young children who develop diabetes.
