Ten Kids Inc. is a Lexington-based non-profit organization developed to provide children in Haiti with the basics of life: food, clean water, safe shelter, medical care and education. On the next Connections, Renee talks with founder Gip Gibson and board member Holly Brady about the organization. The program airs Friday, Jan. 9 at 4/3 p.m. CT on KET2 and Sunday, Jan. 11 at 1:30/12:30 p.m. CT on KET1.Gibson recounts the trip to Haiti that inspired him to establish Ten Kids Inc., saying that nothing could have prepared him for the extreme poverty he witnessed there. He was overwhelmed by the poor conditions many Haitian children endure, and upon his return, he and his wife decided they could generate the resources to support 10 children.
Brady discusses her decision to join the Gibsons' campaign, explains why she believes Ten Kids Inc. to be a sustainable program and describes the work they do to obtain funds for the children's care.
Ten Kids can provide 10 children's needs: food, water, electricity, clothing, books, schooling, "house parents" and more for $12,000 per year. They are currently supporting seven children, and they discuss plans to expand the operation.
Gibson and Brady also talk about their vision for the children they support, the importance of community service in the U.S. and around the world, and how the downturn in the economy has affected their mission.
