The vibrant glasswork of Stephen Rolfe Powell and the intricate automata sculpture of Steve Armstrong reveal the distinctive energies of two gifted Kentucky artists on the next edition of Kentucky Muse. "Fire and Motion" airs Thursday, Jan. 22 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET1.First, Muse explores the 'fire' of Powell's Centre College glasswork studio, which bombards the senses with burning glass, rock music, materials at temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees and vibrant splashes of color. Art professors, students and colleagues discuss the impact of the art and the artist as Powell and his assistants, Mitzi Elliot, Paul Hughes and Cynthia Lauren Arnold, walk through the process of creating one of their elaborate pieces. The team members hurriedly describe their roles while attempting not to break the intense concentration and choreography required to work in the dangerous environment.
Then, the program goes from the ruckus atmosphere of Powell's studio to the quiet solitude and peaceful 'motion' in Armstrong's woodworking shop. A University of Kentucky graduate, Armstrong transitioned from long-time Montessori teacher to full-time artist. He shares the creation of one of his moving sculptures from a sketch to a finished piece of artwork. Meanwhile, collectors, friends and family members describe their pleasure in Armstrong's designs and offer their interpretations of individual pieces. His wife, artist Diane Kahlo, also gives her take on his precise, labor-intensive work.
