Kentucky’s junior scribes have an opportunity to show off their creativity by entering the 15th Annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest for students in kindergarten through third grade. KET will accept submissions beginning Feb. 1.
The Kentucky winner from each grade level will be entered into the national Reading Rainbow contest for a chance to win the grand prize, a flat-panel television with a DVD player. The second-place winner will receive a digital camera and the third-place winner will receive an MP3 player. Every child who enters the contest receives a special certificate of achievement.
To enter, kids must submit an original story with five original and colorful illustrations. Children who cannot write may dictate their story to a grownup. The length of the stories varies by grade level. Complete rules and samples of winning stories from previous years are available at pbskids.org/readingrainbow.
The deadline for submissions is April 1, and Kentucky’s winners will be announced on May 15. Those interested in participating may contact Kathy Day at (859) 258-7451 or kday@ket.org for more information.
