Author Forum explores nature, myths of success

For Release: 2009-02-02 11:23:00

Two popular culture icons and bestselling writers come together for a lively discussion of how our culture shapes us in Kentucky Author Forum Presents "Great Conversations: Malcolm Gladwell and Daniel Pink," airing Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1 and W ednesday, Feb. 25 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET2.

Gladwell, a staff writer with New Yorker magazine since 1996, discusses his latest book Outliers, an examination of the factors that enable people to succeed. Pink, a contributing editor of Wired and formerly chief speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore, is the author of The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You 'll Ever Need.

In this program, the two focus on Gladwell's book Outliers, examining hidden factors that may actually shape who people are and what they can accomplish. The typical "success story" of the talented self-made individual is a fallacy, Gladwell argues, contending that factors such as background, luck and even birth date may be more important. He supports his conclusions with a variety of fascinating examples, from how Scotch-Irish heritage influences the type of murders in Harlan County, Ky., to why simply being born January through March increases a Canadian boy's chance of becoming a hockey star.

Gladwell's provocative ideas are delivered within a fast-moving and often witty exchange of conversation between him and Pink. Pink pushes Gladwell on an explanation for his success, to which the Outlier author initially replies, "I have no idea why." Of course, as is revealed later, he does have a few thoughts on the matter.

Kentucky Author Forum Presents "Great Conversations: Malcolm Gladwell and Daniel Pink" is a KET production. The director is Carl Babcock, producer is Tom Bickell and Teresa Day serves as executive producer. The author's appearance in Louisville was produced by the Kentucky Author Forum (Mary Moss Greenebaum, producer) and sponsored by the University of Louisville, in partnership with Brown-Forman and The Humana Foundation.
