Alma Glover, director of the Ralph Bunche Community Center in Glasgow, talks about her Barren County roots, the history of the community center and the services it provides on the next edition of Connections with Renee Shaw. The program airs Friday, Feb. 27 at 4/3 p.m. CT on KET2.Glover discusses her childhood in Glasgow, recalling the ways the community she lived in both thrived and suffered during the segregation era. Glover also talks about her own family's history and her musical in-laws.
Then, Glover describes the history of the community center. The center was originally an all-black school, and Glover explains how she helped coordinate the purchase of the building and transform it into a community center. The center now offers several programs, including the Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, drug prevention assistance and the community foundation, which raises funds for the center and several college scholarships, among other services. The center is also the home of Global Fest in the Barrens, an annual event that celebrates the diverse cultures around the world.
Glover also discusses the school's namesake, Ralph Johnson Bunche, a political scientist and diplomat, who was the first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Bunche won the prize for his efforts at negotiating peace in Palestine in the late 1940s.
