Donna Hubbard -- a former prison inmate, prostitute and drug addict -- now a pastor and the keynote speaker at this year's Black Women's Conference at the University of Kentucky, shares her inspiring life story on the next edition of Connections with Renee Shaw. The program airs Friday, April 10 at 4/3 p.m. CT on KET2 and Sunday, April 12 at 1:30/12:30 p.m. CT on KET1.

Hubbard, who was raised in an affluent Atlanta family, married and gave birth to her first child while she was still in high school. She recounts her two failed marriages, her experience with domestic violence in her community and in her own life, and her downward spiral into drug addiction and multiple arrests. Hubbard also talks about her failed attempts at turning her life around and explains how she ended up facing years in a federal prison alongside a group of gang members.

Hubbard then describes her own spiritual awakening and the end of her long-time drug addiction. Still a prisoner, Hubbard had to rely on the kindness of a complete stranger, who she calls Mother Brown, for the care of her newborn daughter. Mother Brown, she says, is the perfect example of the positive impact that individuals can make in their communities.

Finally, Hubbard tearfully explains why she would not change the details of her past if she were given the opportunity and discusses her book, My Soul Looks Back and Wonders, scheduled to be released this summer.

Connections with Renee Shaw is a KET production, produced by Shaw and Carolyn Gwinn. More information about Connections, including streaming video, is available at www.ket.org/connections.
