KET presents a primer on the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games with The Alltech World Equestrian Games: A Beginner's Guide, preparing viewers for the events soon to take center stage at the Kentucky Horse Park. The program airs Sunday, April 26 at 5:30/4:30 p.m. CT on KET2; Wednesday, April 29 at 5/4 p.m. CT on KET2; and Wednesday, April 29 at 10:30/9:30 p.m. CT on KET1.The program introduces Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech, who discusses the worldwide popularity of the games and Alltech's sponsorship, and John Nicholson, executive director of the Kentucky Horse Park, who provides a sneak peek at the park's multi-million dollar renovations.
Then, the program previews each of the exciting events, which include extraordinary displays of horsemanship, ranging from carriage driving to choreographed dancing on horseback. The games present competitions in jumping, dressage, carriage driving and cross-country tests, as well as some events Kentuckians may be less familiar with, including reining, driving, vaulting and endurance racing.
Reining adds western-influenced actions, such as sliding stops and perfect circles, to standard dressage, in which the horse performs a series of set movements. In vaulting, teams or individuals perform acrobatic dances on horseback, including lifts, handstands and aerial moves. And, participants in endurance competitions race the clock for a distance of more than 100 miles. The games also showcase para-equestrian events, providing high-level competition for riders with disabilities.
The Alltech World Equestrian Games: A Beginner's Guide is a KET production, produced by Tom Thurman. More information about KET programming and education services, as well as how to support KET, can be found at www.ket.org.
