The competition airs on National Geographic Bee, Thursday, May 21 at 5/4 p.m. CT on KET2.Since its inception in 1989, JEOPARDY! host Alex Trebek has served as the moderator for the national finals of the bee, which annually brings together thousands of students, teachers, parents and viewers for the entertaining and challenging test of knowledge spanning the broad discipline of geography.
The National Geographic Bee takes place in three stages -- school, state and national. The national finals will be held at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., May 19 and 20, with top winners sharing $50,000 in college scholarships.
The event is the culmination of state competitions, which narrowed the field to 55, who each receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington to compete for a spot in the national finals. Ten students emerge victorious, from an original field of 5 million in grades four through eight, to vie for the top prize of a $25,000 scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. The second and third place winners receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships respectively.
National Geographic Bee is produced by Maryland Public Television. More information about KET programming and education services, as well as how to support KET, can be found at www.ket.org.
