Kentucky artist Darryl Davis reveals his interesting technique of embellishing his canvas creations with dryer lint on the next Connections with Renee Shaw. In a separate interview, poet Bianca Spriggs discusses writing, teaching and her role at the annual Kentucky Women Writers Conference. The program airs Friday, July 3 at 4/3 p.m. CT on KET2 and Sunday, July 5 at 1:30/12:30 p.m. CT on KET1.

A Cincinnati native, Davis began creating art at age 4 and credits his mother and teachers for encouraging him and nurturing his talent. Now, Davis's pieces are often based on historical moments and places, such as Lexington's Cheapside slave auction.

Davis says his artistic experiments with dryer lint began after a typical laundry day. He shares several of his pieces, including a portrait of Bruce Springsteen made entirely from lint. Davis also discusses connecting with other lint artists around the world, working with poet Frank X Walker and his time as a Navy illustrator and draftsman.

Then, Spriggs, a Lexington artist and educator, discusses serving as a visiting writer at Transylvania University, teaching writing and her artistic process.

Spriggs, one of the Affrilachian poets, an ensemble of African-American and minority writers from Appalachia and the South, is the creator of the annual poetry slam featured at the Kentucky Women Writers Conference. Her poems appear in many collections and anthologies, including Patchwork Woman, The Bottle Tree, New Growth: Recent Kentucky Writings and more.

Connections with Renee Shaw is a KET production, produced by Shaw and Carolyn Gwinn. More information about Connections, including streaming video, is available at www.ket.org/connections.
