On the next edition of Connections with Renee Shaw, Robyn Stuart of Frankfort, who fashioned a family holiday recipe into a successful business, shares the story behind her signature bourbon balls. Then, the program heads to Lexington's family-owned Brown's Bakery to sample some gourmet cupcakes and pies. The program airs Friday, July 10 at 4/3 p.m. CT on KET2 and Sunday, July 12 at 1:30/12:30 p.m. CT on KET1.First, Stuart shares the family history behind her popular bourbon balls and talks about how she expanded one simple recipe into a booming home business with more than 60 varieties of bourbon and liqueur candies. Although it is currently a single-person operation, Stuart's business, D B Bourbon Candy, provides thousands of bourbon balls for some of Kentucky's most exclusive and elaborate Derby parties. Stuart explains how she handles the demand.
Then, Renee visits Brown's Bakery, which is operated by husband-and-wife team James and Bridget Brown. The downtown Lexington bakery serves up 21 varieties of cupcakes, mini-pies and sculpted cakes, all made from scratch. The Browns also bake breakfast pastries, donuts, breads and cookies daily.
