Alternative singer/songwriter Ben Sollee, a Lexington native and formally trained cellist, visited One to One with Bill Goodman to discuss his career in music and perform a couple of songs before he embarked on his bicycle ride to the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn. The program airs Sunday, July 12 at 1 p.m./noon CT on KET1 and Tuesday, July 14 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.Sollee discusses his musical influences, his introduction to the cello at Lexington's Yates Elementary School and his decision to pursue a career as a professional musician. He also talks about his debut solo album, Learning to Bend, and his previous work with Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet, which includes banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck and award-winning violinist Casey Driessen. Sollee reveals the inspiration behind some of his lyrics and performs "How to See the Sun Rise" and "Just a Song."
The young musician also discusses his unusual mode of transportation for the more than 300 mile trip from Lexington to the Bonnaroo festival, where he performed earlier this month. Sollee names several reasons why he chose to ride a bicycle to Tennessee, including making the trip healthier and more environmentally friendly and allowing him to really get a sense of the communities he travels through. Sollee also hopes to use the trip as a method of raising awareness about poverty in Appalachia and around the world.
