One to One with Bill Goodman welcomes new University of Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari, who discusses the highs and lows of his career; his new job; and his upcoming book, Bounce Back: Overcoming Setbacks to Succeed in Business and in Life. The program airs Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m./noon CT on KET1 and Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.The coach talks about his childhood in Moon Township, Penn., where he served as ball boy for the high school basketball team while he was in elementary school. It was during that time, he says, that he began dreaming of becoming a high school basketball coach and teacher, never imagining that he would one day become the head coach of an NBA team or at the University of Kentucky.
A first-generation college student, Calipari played basketball at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Clarion University of Pennsylvania. He discusses his college experiences on and off the court, including playing while wearing a wrestling mask to protect a broken cheekbone and renting mobile homes to his fellow students.
Calipari also discusses some of the key points in Bounce Back. For instance, he explains how he stays "relentlessly positive" and focused on moving forward through difficult times. He talks about how he has used the principles in the book to deal with situations like his Memphis team's overtime loss to Kansas in the 2008 NCAA championship game, being fired as the head coach of the New Jersey Nets and recent sanctions imposed on Memphis for violations while he was head coach there. One tactic he uses for handling these situations is consulting his "kitchen cabinet," a small network of close friends who provide advice and support without glossing over the truth.
Finally, Calipari talks about his experiences in Kentucky so far and why traveling around the Commonwealth often reminds him of his hometown.
