The next Kentucky Life visits John Taylor, who teaches African-American youth self-confidence, trust, kindness and a fierce pride in the achievements of their ancestors at his Buffalo Soldier camp; visits Magee’s Bakery in Maysville for a taste of its world-famous Transparent Pie; and drops in at the Kentucky Book Fair in Frankfort, one of the oldest events of its kind in the country. The program, hosted by Dave Shuffett, airs Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET; Sunday, Oct. 25 at 4:30/3:30 p.m. CT on KET; and Sunday, Oct. 25 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.First, the program travels to Louisville to meet Taylor, who runs a summer camp designed to inspire African-American youths as they learn about the Buffalo Soldiers of the 1800s, a U.S. Army cavalry regiment made up of African-American soldiers.
Then, it’s off to Maysville’s Magee’s Bakery, known world-wide as the home of the Transparent Pie, which is considered the basis for pecan pie, Chess Pie and Derby Pie. Dave travels to the bakery on a wagon pulled by a team of Percheron draft horses, then learns how to mix, shape and bake the sweet treat.
Next, the “Our Town” segment visits Midway in Woodford County. Founded in 1831 by the Lexington and Ohio Railroad Company, Midway is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to an array of antique shops and one-of-a-kind restaurants.
Finally, Kentucky Life attends the Kentucky Book Fair in Frankfort, one of the largest and oldest book fairs in the country. Kentucky writers of all genres, ranging from poetry to cookbooks, join noted national authors to present and promote their work, as well as meet face-to-face with their readers.
Kentucky Life is a KET production, produced by Brandon Wickey. Segment producers are Shuffett, Tom Thurman, Valerie Trimble and Wickey.
