KET asks Kentuckians to join national effort harnessing grassroots enthusiasm for educational media

KET has joined with educational television and public radio stations across the country in an unprecedented effort to harness the enthusiasm of the 170 million Americans who watch, listen to or use the services and programming of educational media each month. These organizations are asking individuals to join together to ensure that all Americans continue to have universal access to the high-quality, non-commercial programming that public broadcasters provide.

The centerpiece of the campaign is a website – 170MillionAmericans.org – at which listeners and viewers in local communities across the country can sign up and be counted among the 170 million who value public media.

The 170 Million Americans campaign was founded on the belief that our country needs a strong educational and public media system as a source of balanced, thoughtful, and in-depth news and public affairs coverage; local cultural programming; non-commercial educational programs for adults and children; and instructional media resources for the classroom from early childhood learners to K-12 students to adults studying for their GED certificate to post-secondary students.

“Education is our middle name,” says KET Executive Director Shae Hopkins. “Public funding on the statewide and national level is vital, ensuring that KET will continue to serve Kentuckians through high quality classroom resources for teachers and students, as well as through our children’s, news and public affairs, and local cultural programming.

Annual state and federal funding for KET amounts to only $3.63 per Kentuckian. That’s less than the cost of a box of cereal, for all the educational and enlightening programming and services KET provides every day.”
