Next on Jubilee from the International Newgrass Festival: Ryan Cavanaugh & No Manís Land/Hazel Johnson Band

For Release: 2012-09-24 13:52:00

Two distinctive groups, bluegrass/jazz players Ryan Cavanaugh & No Manís Land, and the old-time inspired Hazel Johnson Band, perform on the next edition of Jubilee, recorded live at the third-annual International Newgrass Festival in Bowling Green, KY. The program premieres Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET and Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11/10 p.m. CT on KET2.

Cavanaughís new line-up, No Manís Land, is inspired by a 20-year career playing the five-string banjo and a lifetime of listening to jazz music. The band was formed in late 2009 and based on his vision of bringing the banjo back to jazz. ďI have always loved American bluegrass music because it is my roots, but I also love the history of jazz in America,Ē he said. Cavanaugh grew up in various parts of the United States, including North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Montana and New Jersey. He moved to North Carolina early in his banjo-playing years and was influenced by the areaís deep-rooted banjo tradition.

Hazel Johnson, who was born in England and grew up in Kenya, has lived in the small Kentucky town of Hiseville, located in Barren County, since 1972. Before coming to the United States, she ran the Cambridge Folk Music Festival in England, one of the longest-running folk music festivals in the world. After coming to the United States, Johnson developed a friendship with folk-music icons Norman Blake and Sam Bush.

Jubilee is a KET production. Nick Helton is the producer/director and Teresa Day is the executive producer.
