Next Kentucky Life explores Morgan County songwriter, Lexington's beer scene, Hart County B&B and more

For Release: 2013-01-15 10:02:00

The next Kentucky Life, hosted by Dave Shuffett, takes on a country theme with profiles on Morgan County songwriter Paul Gilley, a Rockcastle County historical marker, Lexington’s growing beer-brewing scene, and Hart County’s Country Girl at Heart Farm Bed and Breakfast. The program airs Saturday, Feb. 9 at 8/7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 10 at 4/3 p.m. on KET.

Morgan County native Paul Gilley is credited with writing some of the 20th century’s most famous songs, including “Cold, Cold Heart” and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” made popular by Hank Williams. Kentucky Life profiles Gilley, who died at age 27. Over the years, he has largely been forgotten outside of his native Maytown, despite the fact that many of the songs he wrote were recorded by legends such as Perry Como and Ray Price.

Also, the program explores a historical marker in Rockcastle County that reprises the history of the Renfro Valley radio broadcasts that originated in 1939 and were aimed at preserving the customs, culture and music of pioneer America. Many well-known country music stars began their careers at Renfro Valley.

Next, Shuffett visits Country Boy Brewery in Lexington, which opened in late 2011, to discover how Kentucky is embracing the national growing trend of locally brewed craft beer. Shuffett learns that local breweries are as much about the community as they are the craft. This segment also visits West Sixth Brewery in Lexington, which opened in 2012.

In addition, the program visits Country Girl at Heart Farm Bed and Breakfast in Hart County, which offers an interactive farm experience to guests, including the chance to help feed animals and collect chicken eggs. The B&B also focuses on beyond-organic farming, green-living practices and local foods. Innkeeper Darlene Rose allows guests to be immersed in farm-style green living in a relaxing, interactive way.

Kentucky Life is a KET production, produced by Brandon Wickey. Segment producers are Jim Piston, Shuffett, Valerie Trimble and Brandon Wickey.
