On the next Great Conversations, Elaine Pagels, Harrington Spear Paine Professor of Religion at Princeton University and author of numerous books including The Gnostic Gospels, is interviewed by Gustav Niebuhr, associate professor in religion and the media at Syracuse University. Great Conversations: Elaine Pagels and Gustav Niebuhr airs Monday, April 15 at 10/9 p.m. on KET.

In front of a live audience at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, Pagels discusses her works and her general interest in early Christianity. She concludes her talk with a discussion of her latest book, Revelations: Visions, Prophecy, and Politics in the Book of Revelation. The book explores the history of the apocalyptic Biblical book, which is filled with images of cataclysmic combat between heavenly and hellish powers. The book also examines other Jewish, Christian and Pagan books of Revelation written around the same time. This and other works from Pagels have gained popularity for exploring competing visions of Christian orthodoxy.

Pagels joined the faculty at Princeton University in 1982, shortly after receiving a MacArthur Fellowship. Perhaps best known as the author of The Gnostic Gospels, she has published widely on Gnosticism and early Christianity. She also has authored the New York Times best-seller Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas and Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity.

Throughout a 20-year career in journalism, most recently at the New York Times, Niebuhr is a leading writer about religion in American. In addition to his work being published in magazines, books and online, he also offers commentaries for NPR's "All Things Considered" and he has just finished working on a book about religious pluralism and interfaith relations in America.

The program was recorded at Pagelsí recent appearance at the Kentucky Author Forum in Louisville. Great Conversations: Elaine Pagels and Gustav Niebuhr is a KET production. Producer-director is Tom Bickel, and executive producer is Teresa Day. Kentucky Author Forum is produced by Mary Moss Greenebaum and sponsored by the University of Louisville, in partnership with Brown-Forman and The Humana Foundation.
