Next Kentucky Life features Nicholasville horse trainers The Double Dans, Weaver’s Hot Dogs in London and more

For Release: 2013-03-11 08:14:00

The next Kentucky Life, hosted by Dave Shuffett, features photographer John Cohen, Laurel County’s Weaver's Hot Dogs, the Shepherdsville train crash of 1917 and Australian horse trainers The Double Dans. The program airs Saturday, April 6 at 8/7 p.m. and Sunday, April 7 at 4/3 p.m. on KET.

New York photographer John Cohen first came to Eastern Kentucky in the late 1950s with a still camera and an eye for capturing the region’s landscape, people and music. In 2012, his iconic photos were displayed at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where Cohen spoke about his artistic connections to Kentucky.

Known worldwide for their performances in equine shows and events, two Australian horse trainers, Dan James and Dan Steers, have received a warm welcome from Kentucky’s horse industry as they’ve made Nicholasville their home in the United States. In addition to performances, “The Double Dans” do clinics that apply their popular approaches to natural horsemanship.

The program also explores a train crash that is still regarded as the worst in Kentucky’s history. In 1917, just days before Christmas, a local passenger train called the “Accommodation” had come from Louisville and was bound for Springfield. The train was in the station at Shepherdsville when it was struck from behind by the Cincinnati-to-New Orleans express train “The Flyer,” travelling at about 25 miles an hour.

In addition, for the program’s Today’s Special segment, Shuffett visits the longtime London landmark Weaver’s Hot Dogs. Known especially for their chili and chili dogs, the restaurant has been in business for more than 70 years.

Kentucky Life is a KET production, produced by Brandon Wickey. Segment producers are Tom Thurman, Rob Elliott, Paul Smith and Kelly Campbell.
