Next Louisville Life features NuLu’s Harvest restaurant, Louis Brandeis legacy and more

For Release: 2013-04-29 13:31:00

The next Louisville Life, hosted by Candyce Clifft, features the legacy of Louis Brandeis, Harvest restaurant’s farm-to-table vision, New Albany’s bicentennial, and a local non-profit that helps residents in low-income neighborhoods acquire local produce. The program premieres Saturday, May 25 at 7/6 p.m. on KET and Thursday, May 30 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. on KET2.

Arguably one of Louisville’s most famous native sons, Louis Brandeis was born in 1856 and rose to prominence as the man dubbed the “People’s Lawyer.” Named associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, Brandeis was the first Jew to be named to the Supreme Court. The University of Louisville Law School bears his name and each year honors notable jurists with the Brandeis Medal. Louisville Life takes viewers to a medal ceremony and talks to a local expert on Brandeis.

Next, the program heads to the downtown NuLu district of East Market Street where Harvest restaurant has a locally grown farm-to-table vision, creating regionally inspired, seasonal cuisine from local produce. Harvest sources at least 80 percent of its food from farmers and growers from within a 100-mile radius of Louisville.

Louisville Life also explores New Roots, a local non-profit that is helping connect residents in low-income neighborhoods with fresh local produce through an innovative strategy called “Fresh Stop.” At a Fresh Stop, residents pool their money and negotiate with farmers to purchase produce in bulk, which is then divided into shares on a sliding scale fee.

In the studio, Clifft talks with David Barksdale, historian and committee member on the bicentennial of New Albany.

Louisville Life is a KET production, produced and directed by Gary Pahler. Jayne McClew is co-producer, and Angelic Phelps is associate producer.
