Jubilee showcases one of bluegrass music's most established bands, the Goins Brothers, from Bluefield, W.Va. The hour-long program was taped at the 1997 Carter County Shrine Club Bluegrass Festival in Olive Hill, Ky.The Goins Brothers band, which was formed nearly 30 years ago, includes Melvin Goins on guitar, Dale Vanderpool on banjo, John Keith on mandolin, John McNeely on guitar and David Bowling on bass. John Rigsby is a guest fiddle player for this performance.
The band kicks off the show with "Salty Dog" then moves on to "Freight Train Boogie" and "No Curb Service Anymore," written by Melvin and Ray Goins. The performance also includes renditions of "Sallie Gooden," "Cabin in the Hills," "Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone" and "Heavenly Light Is Shining on Me."
Interspersed throughout the music is an interview with Melvin Goins, who tells funny and touching stories of how, as a boy, he traded five hens and a rooster for his first banjo, of his dreams of becoming a musician (he even built his own stage) and of the love of music he shared with his brother Ray. Goins also recounts the early days of playing on a daily radio program in Pikeville, Ky., as part of the highly regarded Lonesome Pine Fiddlers.
