When bluegrass musician James King leans into the microphone and lets go with one of his strong vocal performances, it's easy to see--and feel--the enthusiasm and love this Virginia native has for the traditional music he plays.On this edition of Jubilee, the James King Band from Galax, Va. presents an hour-long performance of bluegrass music sung and played from the heart. Filled with powerful vocals and impressive instrumentals, the concert was taped at the 1997 Carter County Shrine Club Bluegrass Festival in Olive Hill, Ky.
King, who has played with the Lundy Brothers and the Southern Mountain Boys, credits his love of bluegrass music to Jimmy Martin and Carter and Ralph Stanley. His band includes Mike Compton on mandolin, Tom Adams on banjo, David McLaughlin on guitar and vocals and Marshall Wilborn on bass.
This Jubilee performance features songs from two of the group's Rounder Records albums--These Old Pictures and Lonesome and Then Some--plus many others, including "(When the Phone Don't Ring) It'll Be Me," "A Few Old Memories," "Amazing Grace," "Blue Ridge Cabin Home" and Carter Stanley's "You're Still To Blame." The band also performs "Big House on the Hill," "Live and Let Live" and "Crazy Heart."
