This guide is designed as a resource for teachers who wish to use the video performance of The Road, a dance opera composed by Somerset native Dan Dutton, as a stimulus for creative or critical writing. It includes background information about the piece, its origins, and the characters, as well as a series of classroom projects.
Those projects are designed to be used in a variety of ways. Teachers may use some or all of the activities in conjunction with viewing the program. The first six activities work well either as pre-viewing or follow-up activities. When used sequentially, the activities are designed not only to stimulate writing but also to give students insight into the creative process and the tools they can use in responding to a work of art. Although presented as creative writing assignments, these projects adapt easily to music, dance, or visual art composition.
