The Road is the second in a cycle of four dance operas entitled The Secret Commonwealth. The operas convey the experiences of a storyteller, who is a metaphor for the artist's imagination. The opera titles and subjects:

The Secret Commonwealth is a dance opera, a form of composition that tells a story through song and dance. The performances and video productions of The Secret Commonwealth combine storytelling, song, music, dance, and visual art to reveal the experiences of an imaginary Storyteller.
