One to One with Bill Goodman:
Nevil Shed

aired April 7 and 9 and November 24, 2006

In 1966, an all-black team from Texas Western College defeated an all-white, Adolph Rupp-coached University of Kentucky team in the finals of the men’s NCAA Division I basketball tournament. The racial makeup of the two teams at a time when college sports were only beginning to integrate, coupled with UK’s status as basketball royalty, made the game a watershed event. One of the stars of that history-making Texas Western team, Nevil Shed, talks with Bill Goodman on this edition of One to One.

In early 2006, the 40th anniversary of the famous game was marked with a portrayal on the silver screen: Jerry Bruckheimer’s film Glory Road. And Shed’s image appeared on a special commemorative Wheaties cereal box. He talks with Goodman about the game and how it was depicted by Hollywood as well as his life in and after basketball.

After graduating from Texas Western (now the University of Texas at El Paso), Shed went on to play in the NBA for the Boston Celtics. Since then, he has built a second career as a successful school and college administrator. He is coordinator of student programs at the University of Texas-San Antonio and a celebrated motivational speaker and consultant for the San Antonio Spurs.
