Since taking over as the 17th president of the University of Louisville in 2002, James Ramsey has pursued a course he describes as “moving forward with change while respecting and building on [U of L’s] great history and tradition.” He talks about his efforts to move the university closer to its goal of becoming a preeminent metropolitan institution of higher learning on this edition of One to One.
A Kentucky native, Ramsey holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Kentucky University and master’s and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Kentucky. Before assuming the top post at U of L, he served as senior policy adviser and state budget director for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and senior professor of economics and public policy at U of L. He also has held several other positions in state government.
A frequent national speaker and writer on economic issues in the public sector, Ramsey received the National Governors Association’s Outstanding Public Service Award in 2001 and was named Kentucky’s Distinguished Economist of the Year in 1999.
