One to One with Bill Goodman:
Dr. Mike Fletcher
aired January 19 and 21, 2007
With more than two million civilians displaced and a death toll estimated at 200,000-400,000, the tangled ethnic warfare in Sudan’s Darfur region has created one of the worst humanitarian crises of the young 21st century. Dr. Mike Fletcher, a Pikeville physician who recently traveled to Sudan to help alleviate the suffering among displaced people, is Bill Goodman’s guest on this edition of One to One.
An interventional pain physician and anesthesiologist at the Leonard Lawson Cancer Center at Pikeville Medical Center, Fletcher went to Darfur in early November 2006 along with a dentist, a physician’s assistant, and a paramedic. Their goal was to provide basic health care to children and adults displaced by the ongoing conflict. The trip was organized by Healthcare Ministries and sponsored by the non-governmental Education Development Organization of Sudan, based in Khartoum. In the interview, Fletcher describes his background as well as his visit to the Sudan and the profound impact it has had on his life.
Fletcher was born and raised in Ohio but has family roots in Eastern Kentucky—his father was raised in Jackson.
