James Votruba, president of Northern Kentucky University, talks higher education with Bill Goodman on this edition of One to One.
Votruba assumed the presidency of the 14,700-student university in Highland Heights in August 1997. He came to NKU from Michigan State University, where he was vice provost for university outreach and professor of higher education from 1989 to ’97. Before that, he was dean of the College of Education and Human Development at Binghamton University and held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Drake University.
Votruba holds degrees in political science and sociology and a Ph.D. in higher education administration. He is a frequent lecturer, author, and consultant in the areas of higher education leadership, strategic planning, and public engagement.
In the interview, Goodman and Votruba discuss improving higher education in Kentucky; rising tuition costs; and Votruba’s work as co-chair of Vision 2015, a Northern Kentucky regional planning initiative.
