One to One with Bill Goodman:
Gary P. West

aired July 6 and 8, 2007

Host Bill Goodman welcomes author Gary P. West to this edition of One to One for a mouth-watering discussion of the best places to eat while exploring Kentucky.

West and his wife, Deborah, spent two years traveling to a host of restaurants in towns around the Commonwealth, sometimes eating in five or six restaurants in a day. The results of that gastronomic tour were revealed in West’s book Eating Your Way Across Kentucky: 101 Must Places To Eat, an illustrated traveler’s guide to local favorites with detailed driving directions and menu reviews.

A Bowling Green resident, West was inspired by the guides published by fellow Warren Countian Duncan Hines, whose 1930s and ’40s books helped travelers identify good places to stop for a bite to eat across the country. West’s rules on which establishments to visit were simple: no chain restaurants and, whenever possible, only restaurants that had been operating for at least five years.

West is also the author of King Kelly Coleman: Kentucky’s Greatest Basketball Legend, about the Wayland-born star whose 1956 Kentucky High School State Basketball Tournament record of 68 points and 28 rebounds still stands today.
