Carey Cavanaugh

Carey Cavanaugh, a former U.S. ambassador and director of the University of Kentucky’s Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce, is Bill Goodman’s guest on this edition of One to One.

Cavanaugh discusses his 22-year diplomatic career with the U.S. Department of State. Under Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush, he helped advance peace efforts involving Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Tajikistan, and Turkey. In addition to Washington assignments in the State Department, at the Pentagon, and on Capitol Hill, Cavanaugh served in Berlin, Moscow, Tbilisi, Rome, and Bern. He received his education at the University of Florida and the University of Notre Dame, with additional graduate work at the U.S. Army Russian Institute in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

The Patterson School, named for Dr. James Kennedy Patterson, UK’s first president, is a master’s degree program that prepares students for careers in international affairs. In addition to his position as director, Cavanaugh serves as a professor of diplomacy and conflict resolution.
