One to One with Bill Goodman:
William E. Brock
premiered September 16, 2007
Host Bill Goodman discusses the future of education with former Republican U.S. Sen. William Emerson “Bill” Brock III of Tennessee on this edition of One to One.
Brock, a member of the New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, discusses the commission’s report on education and the economy, titled “Tough Choices or Tough Times.” Released in December 2006, the report proposes changes in U.S. education aimed at preparing American workers to compete more effectively internationally. The recommendations include higher standards for both students and teachers and allowing schools to be run by educators as opposed to district school boards.
About the report, Brock has said, “Our nation’s schools are failing to educate our children, and that has to stop—else we condemn our own kids to ever lower incomes.”
Brock also discusses his own life in politics. He was elected to Congress in 1963 and served four terms before becoming a U.S. senator in 1971. He later chaired the Republican National Committee and served as secretary of labor for the Reagan administration.
