On this edition of One to One, Bill Goodman speaks with Ken Troske, professor of economics and director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics. He discusses Kentucky’s economy, including why it has been one of the poorest states in the country for the past several decades.
Noting that the Commonwealth has been left behind while bordering states have experienced economic surges, Troske suggests that the remedy is consistent and long-term investment in education and workforce development. North Carolina, for example, achieved great economic growth after focusing on higher education for more than 40 years.
Troske also talks about state government’s role in economics, how competition can generate new ideas and innovation, keys to economic growth, and the allocation of state funds for education.
