Steve Flairty

premiered May 25, 2008

Steve Flairty, Kentucky author and senior correspondent for Kentucky Monthly magazine, discusses his book Kentucky’s Everyday Heroes: Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things on this edition of One to One.

Kentucky’s Everyday Heroes is a collection of 40 biographical portraits in which Flairty describes people from all over the Commonwealth who are making positive differences in the lives of others. They include Patrick Henry Hughes, a blind University of Louisville student who plays trumpet in the school’s marching band; Kendall Harvey of Adair County, who has made 150 custom bicycles for children with Down syndrome; and Shad Baker of Letcher County, who is leading a massive project to mark a hiking trail on Pine Mountain.

Flairty also discusses his experiences traveling around the state while researching the book, including dealing with regional differences, sorting through the multitude of story ideas he received, and locating the people he wanted to include.
