Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and principal military adviser to the president, the secretary of defense, the National Security Council, and the Homeland Security Council, is Bill Goodman’s guest on this edition of One to One.
Mullen discusses his experiences working with President Bush, the importance of keeping the public informed about events in the Middle East, and the stress that U.S. troops and their families are experiencing due to difficult and repeated deployments. He explains how the military can reduce deployment time, giving troops more time at home.
The admiral also talks about military objectives in Iraq, including providing security for the developing government institutions, promoting a viable economy, and eventually reducing troop levels. He goes on to discuss areas where al-Qaeda forces are still problematic, the instability of Iran, and Taliban activity in Afghanistan.
