One to One with Bill Goodman:
Crit Luallen
premiered November 9, 2008
On this edition of One to One with Bill Goodman, Crit Luallen discusses her job as Kentucky’s auditor of public accounts and the role she plays in monitoring state government spending.
Luallen offers her perspective on the economic crisis facing the nation, relating the events on Wall Street to her role as auditor, and talks about how the national crunch affects state budgets. During her time as auditor, she says, she has uncovered millions of dollars in government fraud and questionable expenditures in the course of monitoring when and where tax revenues are being spent in the Commonwealth. She shares the ways in which her office has successfully evaluated the efficiency of tax-funded programs, known as performance auditing, and recommended plans for improving the programs.
A seventh-generation Kentuckian, Luallen also shares a bit of her personal life and comments on the challenges she has faced as state auditor, including accusations that she favors her own political party while monitoring government spending. She also discusses a disheartening aspect of her job—uncovering corruption in the management of taxpayers’ dollars—and responds to inquiries about her future plans in Kentucky government.
