About RSS and Podcasting

RSS feeds—the name stands for Really Simple Syndication—are subscription services that let you receive updates from a web site automatically, without having to browse to the web site yourself. Instead, you paste the URL for each feed into an RSS reader and use controls within the reader software to establish how often that feed should be checked. Then as long as your computer (or other Internet-connected device) is left on and has access to the Internet, the RSS reader software will continue to check the web sites you have subscribed to and automatically download any files that are new since its last visit. The reader then aggregates the downloaded information for you, giving you a single list of updates that may have been gathered from multiple web sites.

Many RSS feeds are text only—such as news headlines or articles. But they may also include downloadable audio or video files. Once your RSS reader has gathered these files, they may be played on your computer or transferred to a portable device such as an MP3 player. This method of sharing downloadable media files through RSS feeds has been termed “podcasting” for Apple Computer’s popular iPod® player.

New versions of web browsers may have RSS subscription features built in. If your browser does not offer this option, you can download one of several free RSS readers. Here are two sources of background information and links to RSS readers:
