Founded in 1935 as a summer haven for African-American vacationers, American Beach on Florida's Amelia Island was a source of pride during the era of segregation. Today, developers covet its prime real estate, but MaVynee Betsch, great-granddaughter of the resort's founder, is determined to preserve the beach as a piece of cultural history.
