The Oregon Symphony and Portland Opera Chorus re-create the circumstances of a performance of Giuseppi Verdi's Requiem by prisoners in the Nazi concentration camp at Terezin during World War II. Conceived, written, and conducted by Murry Sidlin as a tribute to Terezin choral conductor Raphael Schachter, the program tells the story of the artists through dramatic reenactments, archival film, interviews with camp survivors, and Verdi's dramatic words and music. In staging their performance, the defiant prisoners declared, We must sing to them what we cannot say to them.
