On February 19, 1945, thousands of U.S. Marines landed on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima, entering one of the deadliest battles of modern warfare. Nearly half were wounded or killed, and all but a thousand of the Japanese defenders died in the battle. Fifty years later, survivors from both sides of the conflict returned to the island to honor their shared past.
